Requiem
November 5, 2001

Stephan Kage was a kind man. He was a giving man. You might not guess it from his somewhat gruff demeanor. He was quick to make himself heard when those he loved were wronged, and sometimes, I think sometimes people judged him harshly for that. The bane of teachers and high school theater directors, he always stood up for what he felt was right, and he was more than willing to tell you what he felt. He was nothing if not a man of ideals: a just man coming to terms with an unjust world. I think that troubled him most. He knew eventually he would have to leave his two sons to face an unfair world. He did his best to prepare us. Who knew that day would be November 4, 2001?

My father blessed me in so many ways. He wanted nothing more than to see me succeed. It saddens me to know that he won't be here to beam proudly when my novel hits the shelves. It hurts to know that I won't ever be able to tell him, "Look Dad. I did make it okay." Never again will I feel his warm reassuring hand on my shoulder. The best I can do now is go on, and do the things that will make him proud. And maybe take comfort in my success, knowing I wouldn't have ever made it this far without all the love and commitment he gave to me.

Thank you for always being there for me.

I love you, Dad.

Kevin James Kage
