The Beginning of Something
This is our first week here at Dragonlance Underground. The Raistlins are busy moving boxes of precious spell components into their spacious new office cubicles. There have been complaints that they might be too small: Raistlynn has painted prison bars on her cubicle walls, but really that's an exaggeration. Prisons have better latrines. Everyone is concerned about making their spaces look nice. R4i5t1in and Raisted are fighting over who gets to keep a little scrap of shag carpeting they found in the dumpster out back. Raist666 is blasting death metal on his portable stereo and drawing inverted pentagrams on the walls. Sometimes he takes the Child of Satan routine a little too seriously....
Raistputin has set his computer up on his office chair and is sitting on his desk. He's challenged GoldenBoy to the ultimate fighting game competition. How they're going to play it in an office without power, I'm not sure. Fortunately for me, I have Raistlame peddling madly on a bicycle attached to a dynamo. It's enough to run a laptop computer and brew coffee—which we will do, once Lady Raist returns from gathering water at the gas station down the road.
No, it's not much, but the price was right. Condemned buildings are a steal. Though I'm not sure what we'll do when the immigrants who sold it to us realize that the steel piece is not a viable currency in the United States.
All in all it reminds me of another beginning. A beginning that took place in building as meagerly outfitted as this one. For many people it was the beginning of a legacy. It marked a new tradition. It formed a new standard of excellence. From those humble beginnings sprang something wonderful. It is a story that has touched the lives of millions of people.
I'm speaking, of course, of Abraham Lincoln. Yes, Abraham Lincoln: sixteenth president of the United States. Born in poverty, he educated himself and became first a lawyer, then the Great Emancipator, then a legend. Millions have read his story and take heart that such a man existed.
Oh, and Dragonlance began sort of like that too...
Whoops... the screen is flickering again. Time to go poke Raistlame with the cattle prod.
We hope you'll enjoy wandering the halls of Dragonlance Underground. We've had fun putting it together, and we look forward to working on it for ages to come. Drop us a line and let us know what you think!
