Dragons of a Lost Hope
Some fans will put Dragonlance on an altar, showering Dragonlance with all their praise and pocket money. They seem constantly upbeat. But out of differing experiences, backgrounds and ways of seeing, not all fans and readers will be like this. This second lot may not be the most forthcoming with their money and praise, but they will have thoughts, criticisms and ideas that will not hurt Dragonlance to consider.
Never make the mistake of thinking that those who criticize Dragonlance do not love the world. They do, or they would not continue reading it. They do, or they would not continue waiting and watching for the next big thing. They do, or they would not have strong opinions about how to make Dragonlance better. These people do give a damn, and as long as they are on this side of despair, they want to be heard so as to help.
Yet forgive these people for their pessimism and for criticising even hope. Dragonlance is as old as 1983. In the time between then and now, and especially in the years that the Dragonlance community has been online, it would be an understatement to say that a lot has happened. The world has been changed. Its history has been constantly changed. The gaming system has been changed. And among these, many things have been changed more than once. We doubt that even the most pious fan can think that all the changes were for the better. And for those who have been criticizing, some of the changes hurt even more, because they were hardly ever changes that were desired.
With Dragonlance, it is dangerous to love and to hope. Bitterness wins out over time.
The War of Souls trilogy will be wrapped up soon. The trilogy promised to be big. World-changing things are happening in the books... and some of us are filled with heavy dread. We would like to be optimistic. But whatever the last book is promising may be the exact thing that some of us are dreading. And whatever damage to Dragonlance and Krynn the War of Souls is seeking to undo, it's too late now to erase the years of disappointment dealt to some of its fans.
