The 40SC Istari Games
The tradition of competitive sporting events on Krynn predates the creation of the mortal races. The first known competition was played by the Gods of Krynn. Called World Ball, the first and only match continues to this day, although for a brief period, the game was nearly called on account of a lost ball.
The games of the gods are largely out of the grasp of the mortal races of Krynn, however they too are instilled with the competitive spirit of their patrons. This competitive nature at first fueled wars and enmity among the races. However, for a brief period during the reign of Istar, the Kingpriests sought to unite all races in a show of good will.
It was thus that the Istari Games were born: a series of athletic tournaments designed to promote mutual respect among all races while proving once and for all who really kicked ass.
The spirit of the Istari games spread far and wide, bringing elves, ogres, minotaurs, dwarves, kender, and even gnomes to try their prowess at these events. Medals were provided by the Temple of Paladine, although after a short scandal involving a death knight gladiator it was deemed that perhaps blessing the medals was not in everyone's best interest.
The Istari Games carried on for decades, more or less peaceably. However during the reign of Beldinas, the persecution of the evil races led to the dissolution of the Istari Games as they had been conceived. The Games became a mockery of their former noble intentions, serving only to justify the superiority of the good races. It may not be a coincidence that opening ceremonies of the last Istari Games took place on the same day Istar ceased to be.
It might be said that the true nature of the Istari Games sank long before Istar. In the centuries that followed wars and feuding erupted between all the races. Following the War of Souls, however as strife and chaos consume so many of the races, a gleam of hope has appeared: the resurgence of the Istari Games.
Yes, the Istari games have returned to Krynn, and teams from far and wide have heralded the call. Among them you may hope to see:
The Qualinesti & Silvanesti Elves - Elven Champions have come to mend the hearts of their beleaguered peoples.
The Knights of Neraka - The Knights of Neraka have vowed to take a medal in every competition, and to take more gold medals than the Knights of Solamnia.
