In Memoriam: Louie "The Hands" Scalapini
What can be said about Louie? He was a little guy. You might say real little. But he had big hands, Louie did. He was good with those hands. He used them to better his fellow man. That's me. I was his fellow man.
He was always finding stuff. Louie could find the good stuff. I mean steel, gems--even the occasional magic item. People drop a lot of stuff, and Louie knows exactly where to find that stuff. Now I know what you're thinking, and while we did keep a few items here and there, me and Louie always did our best to return said items to their respective owners. You've never seen a mage so happy as when you return the spell book she's misplaced. She doesn't even mind the obligatory "lost and found" fee. That was Louie, always making people smile, even when they're paying through the nose.
Louie could bust into or out of any place. Crack any chest. I remember one time he busted us out on the joint with only a sewing needle and a piece of string. I sure wish I could've seen the look on those guards' faces. I figure it was a lot like the look on that elf's face when we accidentally busted into her bedroom instead of the treasure room. Who says all elf broads are flat-chested?
My fondest memories of Louie are from our days in Palanthas. We had the system worked out. I'd go in to the Local shops and offer to sell them insurance, and if they weren't motivated enough, Louie would come in and convince them. We were never turned down twice, and we could be in and out of a shop in a matter of moments. We could cover more blocks than a Flotsam hooker, if you know what I'm saying.
But sadly Louie was not long for this world. As our assets grew, we started noticing some things turning up missing. Little things at first, and then bigger things. And lo and behold we always found them on Louie. Well that did it. You can steal from friends, but you never steal from family.
I still remember the look in his eyes when we told him we were going to show him what the bottom of the blood sea looked like. He said, "Ooooh, I've never seen that place before." He even poured the concrete himself. Sometimes I wonder if I did right, pushing him off that boat, but it was never personal. Business is business, and that's all there is to it.
Good-bye, Louie. I'll miss you, Little guy. But not as much as the purse of steel that turned up missing after our little boat trip.
