T'was the Night Before Yuletide
T'was the night before Yuletide and all through the air
The snowflakes were falling lightly with care.
A wind blew softly throughout Kendermore
When there came a knock upon a particular door.
The mother rushed from bed with a candle for light
And opening the door, she prepared her delight
Wanderlust, she hoped, had returned her son home
But curiously at the door stood a tall gnome
He greeted her by bowing, courteous and kind
Then pushed back his glasses, for he was nearly blind
His boots were black and his suit white and red
He had a long white beard and a red hat on his head
A sack over his shoulder, and a waist quite thick
He introduced himself to the mother as "Saint Nick"
Then he pulled out from a bag a ring of pure gold
"Your son was a great hero, so I am told.
He saved the world, by sacrificing himself,
Saving every human, dwarf, Kender, and elf."
Passing the ring, he reached in again,
Pulling forth a wooden doll of a little man.
Examining the wood closely, she didn't understand
Then she began to cry, feeling the wood in her hand.
Tracing the cheeks, the nose and the ears,
Knowing the topknot confirmed her worst fears
She thanked the gnome and went back inside
Tears welling again that she could not hide
She walked ever slowly back to her bed
Lying awake with visions of her son in her head.
Though saddened, the gnome continued on his way
Travelling the land on his mechanical flying sleigh
And to all he visited, he diminished their fears
Awaiting the time till he would visit next year
She could hear the gnome while blowing out the light
"Happy Yuletide to all and to all a good night"
